The Laboratory for Soft Materials and Interfaces, headed by Prof. Lucio Isa, in the Department of Materials of ETH Zurich is looking for a doctoral student (Early Stage Researcher - ESR) for a project in the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie action (MSCA) Innovative Training Network (ITN) “Active Matter”.
The preferred starting date of the position is November 1st 2019. The expected duration of the project is 36 months. Applications will be screened until August 1st 2019 or until a suitable candidate has been found.
The proposed project deals with the fabrication of asymmetric colloidal particles in the micron and sub-micron range using a series of techniques available in the host group and with their activation using diverse propulsion strategies (catalytic reactions, electromagnetic fields, etc.). The student will be engaged in characterizing properties from the single-particle level to collective ones via quantitative microscopy and image analysis. Strong interactions and exchange visits with the other EU network partners are part of the project. As member of the ITN, the student will also have access to a broad range of academic and transferrable skills programs. The host institution offers world-class research facilities in a diverse and stimulating environment.

We are seeking
motivated and talented students with a background in physics, physical chemistry, materials science and related disciplines. Prior experience with optical microscopy and particle tracking is a plus.
