PhD position in nonlinear laser spectroscopy of multiferroic materials in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, temporary

The Multifunctional Ferroic Materials group of Prof. Manfred Fiebig is located at the Department of Materials Science in ETH Zurich and is one of the leading research groups employing nonlinear laser spectroscopy on highly correlated materials in particular on multiferroics. The Laboratory for Multifunctional Ferroic Materials at ETH Zurich is seeking a candidate for a PhD position in nonlinear laser spectroscopy of multiferroic materials.

Project background

The PhD project unites our internationally leading expertise in multiferroics and nonlinear laser spectroscopy. The project focuses on the investigation of magnetoelectric coupling effects in these materials induced by coexisting magnetic and electric long-range order and the exploration of novel, unexpected phases and properties at the level of domains, domain walls and interfaces.

Job description

This position offers students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with our cutting-edge nonlinear-optical spectroscopy and imaging techniques. The PhD candidate applies these techniques to the development of physical concepts in the field of multiferoic materials at the basic-research level.

Your profile

The successful candidate has a Master’s degree in Physics or Material Science with a strong background in experimental laser spectroscopy. Fundamental understanding of condensed matter physics is desirable. The candidate is a team player who likes to work in an interdisciplinary environment at the interface between optics and condensed-matter physics. Candidates are highly motivated, self-organized, creative and used to thinking sideways. Knowledge of analytical programming in Python/Matlab would be beneficial. If you are interested in fundamental research and like to work on complex problems with an urge to understand phenomena at their roots and if you feel a fascination to reveal secrets of materials by light you should apply.
