The Multifunctional Ferroic Materials group of Prof. Manfred Fiebig is located at the Department of Materials Science and is one of the leading research groups employing nonlinear laser spectroscopy on highly correlated materials.
The aim of the PhD project is to investigate the physics of highly correlated material systems with ultrafast nonlinear and terahertz time-domain spectroscopy techniques. The low photon energy of the terahertz radiation fosters investigation of electronic states and carrier dynamics via resonant excitation and detection at ultrafast time scales.
The PhD candidate will use this novel technique to understand the nature of ultrafast carrier dynamics in a wide range of strongly correlated material systems. This position offers the PhD student with opportunities to familiarize themselves with the cutting-edge terahertz time domain and terahertz nonlinear spectroscopy techniques, their fundamental principles and their versatility in investigating new materials.
The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree in Physics or Materials Science. The candidate should be highly motivated, self-organized, creative and an effective team player within an interdisciplinary environment. (S)he should have some practical knowledge in quantum mechanics, condensed matter physics, optics and laser spectroscopy. Some elementary knowledge of analytical programming in Matlab/Python would be beneficial. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory. If you have an urge to build a state-of-the-art terahertz setup, understand physical phenomena at their roots and if you fancy for what you can do with intense light, you should apply.
We look forward to receiving your online application. Please submit a letter of motivation for this position, a CV including publications and presentations, copy of transcripts documenting educational background and contact details of two referees (optional), as a single pdf file. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
