The Laboratory for Mesocopic Systems based at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is a joint laboratory between the ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute, which is the largest research centre for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. The current research focus is the investigation of novel magnetic systems at the mesoscopic scale making use of the clean rooms and large-scale facilities at the Paul Scherrer Institute, and fostering the synergies with the Department of Materials (ETH Zurich). We have recently been awarded funding to hire a Postdoc to investigate the use of arrays of coupled nanoscale magnets for unconventional computation.

Job description

The researcher will be responsible for developing unconventional computing based on the behaviour of arrays of nanomagnets. This will include control of the nanomagnet interactions, observation of the emergent behaviour, and interfacing to electronics. Characterisation will mainly be carried out using lab-based characterisation methods (nanoMOKE, transport, SQUID-VSM), but there is also a possibility to use synchrotron x-ray microscopy at the Swiss Light Source.

This position is a part of a wider European consortium composed of four partners in SpinENGINE project. The SpinENGINE project aims to create a new approach to computing based on emergent properties, i.e., complex, non-linear behaviour in tunable ensembles of nanomagnets.

The researcher will work in Mesoscopic Systems joint laboratory between the Department of Materials, ETH Zurich and Paul Scherrer Institute.

Your profile

The successful candidate has outstanding qualifications with a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, materials science or a related subject, and a background in magnetic thin films, nanostructures and devices. Experience with unconventional computation using magnetic systems is beneficial. He/she should be motivated, proactive and creative in order to be successful, and should have good team and communication skills.
