ETH Zurich is one of the leading universities of the world with a strong focus on science and engineering. In 2010 it established the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF) to do interdisciplinary research on pressing problems. In collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), SEC is undertaking a research programme on "Future Resilient Systems", The FRS addresses the challenges with critical infrastructure systems that provide essential services to modern societies, which is of particular importance to innovation-driven economies like Singapore and Switzerland. Within this framework we are announcing the following job opening.

Job description

The focus is on research in the field of social resilience. We are interested in the role of individuals, communities and institutions in general for the capability of social entities to withstand and recover in the best possible way from disruptive events like natural or climate related catastrophes, terrorist attacks, infrastructure blackouts or all sorts of malicious behaviours. In our research team we will elaborate a set of quantitative and qualitative indicators for social resilience and assess how personal properties, perceptions, group compositions, rules and frameworks contribute to cooperation, trust and "social glue". Recommendations for institutional designs, infrastructure changes and interventions to enhance social resilience are aimed at.

Please note that the employment will be at the Singapore-​ETH Centre and local working regulations will apply. The job is limited to two years. Workplace is Singapore.

Your profile

We expect that you are experienced with the design and implementation of social science experiments in the field and in the laboratory. Further we expect you to be able to do statistical analyses to assess the experimental data. You should dispose of a doctoral degree in economics and have strong interests and experience in behavioural economics. Basic knowledge of conducting cost-benefit analyses would be helpful. You are expected to collaborate with other researchers in the respective module.

The Singapore-ETH Centre provides a multicultural and interdisciplinary environment to researchers working on diverse themes focussed on sustainable and liveable cities, resilient urban systems, and patient-centric healthcare. The centre is home to a community of over 100 doctoral, postdoctoral and professorial researchers working in three main programmes: Future Cities Laboratory, Future Resilient Systems, and Future Health Technologies.
