You will be part of the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry, which is active in researching new innovative space- and ground-based geodetic observation techniques and analysis methods for the long-term, continuous and the real-time monitoring of the environment as well as the Earth system. The newly established professorship in Space Geodesy of Prof. Benedikt Soja will focus on the application of machine learning techniques to geodetic problems, including automated data processing and large-scale time series analysis.
The position will concentrate on the application of machine learning to data and products from space geodetic techniques, such as GNSS. The postdoc will work with parameters, such as geodetic station positions and atmospheric parameters, to detect signals of interest, for example related to geophysical phenomena, and make predictions into the future. Potential applications include the study of seismic activity, tsunami-induced gravity waves in the ionosphere, or severe weather events. A focus will be on the development of machine-learning-related strategies and algorithms for such purposes, as well as the improvement of geodetic data analysis and products. In this framework, the postdoc will conduct original research, with the specific topic being flexible and ideally benefitting from the applicant’s previous experience.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in geodesy, geosciences, physics, informatics, or a related field. The candidate is expected to have a strong background either in space geodesy or in data science / machine learning. A solid basis in mathematics and physics, data analysis methods and programming, fluency in English and a readiness to work with other scientists and students in a multi-disciplinary environment are essential for this position. Interest in teaching activities, the supervision of student works and knowledge of the German language are advantages in the selection process.
