A PhD position in Polymer Composites for Shape Adaptable Biomedical Devices is available in the Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures (CMASLab) at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT).
CMASLab is dedicated to improving current medical devices by using approaches based on ultra-thin polymer composite materials. To that end, we are currently developing innovative heart valve replacement devices, that utilize novel materials for improved durability and reduced manufacturing cost. Based on preliminary studies, this promising concept is to be implemented into biomedical environments now.
The project is dealing with the design and analysis of reconfigurable composite structures, which will be used in a biomedical environment. The main goal is to develop models and structural solutions, that can describe and improve the fatigue behavior and physiological interactions of state-of-the-art transcatheter heart valve implants and finally improve the durability of the biomedical implants. The work will involve technology screening of current devices and solutions and will be carried out in close collaboration with medical experts from the German Heart Center Berlin.
To strengthen our international and interdisciplinary research team, we are looking for an outstanding candidate with a degree in engineering sciences (mechanical, biomedical, aerospace), material science, or an equivalent research related field. Applicants should have a strong interest and background in polymer and composite mechanics and preferably have experience with biomedical devices or durability analysis. Prospective candidates should be highly motivated, passionate about science, and collaborative.
