The Institute of Particle Physics and Astrophysics at ETH Zurich, hosts a solar astrophysics group. The lead, Louise Harra, is also director at PMOD/WRC in Davos.  Founded in 1907, PMOD/WRC is concerned with the study of solar radiation and its effect on the Earth's climate. PMOD/WRC has approximately 50 staff, who work on a range of activities from research, technical and administrative. At PMODWRC the World Meteorological Organization defined, World aerosol Optical depth Research and Calibration Center (WORCC) is conducting research on atmospheric aerosol measurements, modelling and aerosol-solar radiation interaction.

Project background

We are searching for a PhD student 100% to work together with PMODWRC/WORCC scientists, on “Aerosol optical depth (AOD) calibration methods and aerosol measurement-modelling advancements”.

Job description

Main PhD tasks include:

  • Quantification of AOD uncertainty linked with different calibration principles
  • Development of a measurement-modelling synergistic approach for enhancing aerosol products from sun-photometers
  • Development of methods for measuring columnar aerosol optical properties with the PFR sun-photometers
  • Involvement with WORCC activities (campaigns, laboratory work, data management)
Your profile
  • Master's Degree in Physics or natural sciences, MSc in Atmospheric Physics related area preferred
  • Interest and experience in atmospheric or climate sciences
  • Excellent programming experience in scripting languages such as Matlab, Python, etc...
  • English, oral and written communication skills
  • Students with experience in aerosol related research are strongly encouraged to apply
