The Bioanalytics Group (Prof. Petra S. Dittrich) develops microfluidic methods, also referred to as lab-on-chip technology, for applications in the life sciences. We advance methods for basic research as well as for diagnostics and high throughput screening. In our interdisciplinary approach, we combine chemical, physical, biological and engineering aspects of microfluidics-based technology. The Bioanalytics Group is affiliated to the Department Biosystems Science and Engineering, and our laboratories are located in Basel (Switzerland).
We offer a third-party funded project aiming at the development of a model vascular system. Blood vessels have a central role in cell-cell communication across distant regions in the body and in distributing molecular compounds to tissue and cells. Robust mimics are required to systematically investigate influences such as of blood pressure/flow, and the adhesion and permeation of compounds and cells.
In the recent years, lab-on-chip technology has emerged as a powerful means to mimic blood flow in healthy and diseased vessels. Physiological models showed the essential processes of angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and anastomosis (formation of new connections between adjacent blood vessels) on microfluidic platforms.
In this project, novel approaches to create blood vessel models will be elaborated, which involves microfluidic methods, new protocols for the extracellular matrix and improved analytical tools.
The combination of biological and technological aspects is central in our group. A possible candidate should have strong disposition to learn and improve novel methods, and should be very open to different research disciplines. We are seeking for a person holding a Master degree in bioengineering or a related field such as biology, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences or microsystems engineering. Skills in cell culture and fluorescence microscopy are required, prior experience in microfluidic technology is advantageous. Other required qualifications are the ability to communicate effectively in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment, which includes a mastery of oral and written English.
