Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.
We are looking for excellent candidates to fill two PhD positions that are funded through the newly established National Center of Competence in Reseach (NCCR) in Catalysis. One position explores bimetallic catalyst systems for the dry reforming of methane into a synthesis gas and the direct integration of this reaction into a CO2 capture process. The second position aims at probing the structure of bimetallic catalysts and identifying their active sites for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol using complementary operando characterization techniques. A key goal of both projects is the development of structure-activity relationships, allowing to improve the formulation of the current state-of-the art catalysts.
The PhD students participating in this research project are expected to develop bimetallic, supported catalysts with a well-defined structure and composition. The aim is to obtain a fundamental understanding of the structure-activity performance relationship in the developed bimetallic catalysts. To this end, advanced operando methods, including XAS, XRD, electron microscopy and IR spectroscopy will be applied to determine the structure of model catalytic systems (and/or their evolution) under working conditions. The ultimate goal is to uncover guidelines for rational catalyst design, to obtain catalysts with an improved productivity and to integrate these CO2 valorization routes directly into CO2 capture.
Applicants for these two PhD positions are expected to have an excellent MSc degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science or Chemistry. Experience in the field of material synthesis and/or material characterization tools are important and highly valued. We are looking for highly motivated, committed, and creative individuals, able to work in a team and with excellent communication skills. Working in a top-level research environment with advanced laboratory infrastructure, the candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop their research abilities. The positions are available from January 2021 onwards.
