The Complex Materials group in the Department of Materials invites applications for an open PhD Position on encapsulation of microorganisms through microfluidic emulsification.
Microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae find numerous applications in medicine, food, agriculture and have recently also been explored in materials science. Our group is exploiting microfluidic emulsification approaches to encapsulate microorganisms using droplets as templates (see ). Capsules loaded with microorganisms provide protection to the living species and may enable on-demand controlled release of biochemicals and cells.
Your job will be to develop and investigate novel microfluidic-based approaches to encapsulate living organisms using droplet templates. The project will involve the design of microfluidic platforms as well as the investigation of the biological activity of microorganisms in the confined and nutrient-limited environment of microdroplets.
We are looking for a highly motivated materials scientist, chemist, biologist or engineer who would like to apply her/his technical background for the investigation of novel microfluidic-based approaches for the encapsulation of microorganisms.
This position is available strarting from October 1st, 2020.
We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents:
Please note that we accept applications submitted ideally before September 25th, 2020.
