PhD position: reduced order modeling for dynamics of jointed structures in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, temporary

You will be part of the chair in Nonlinear Dynamics, which is active in researching analytical and numerical methods to analyze complex dynamical systems. The chair is embedded in the Institute of Mechanical Systems (IMES).

Project background

In structural assemblages, found in automotive, civil and aerospace applications, damping heavily depends on friction occurring at joints of contact interfaces. An accurate determination of the damping is extremely important to assess the vibrational level, which in turn determines the overall performance in terms of fatigue life, comfort, and operation. When subject to a wide spectrum of operational loads, the contact area and the associated friction forces are likely to change significantly, and therefore, the vibrational behavior is expected to be affected.

Job description

At present, no methods are available to construct reduced order models of joints that are able to accurately and quickly reproduce the dynamic behavior, without calibration with dedicated testing. In this project, we aim to develop efficient reduced order models of joints without resorting to dedicated experiments, but rather by extracting dominant features from high-fidelity finite element models. The project will combine projection-based model order reduction, hyper-reduction, and homogenization techniques to construct reduced order models that solely originate from numerical models and tribological properties of materials.

Your profile

The successful candidate holds a MSc degree in mechanical/aerospace/civil engineering, applied mathematics, or related subjects. A solid background in nonlinear structural dynamics and computational mechanics is required. Experience in model order reduction and joint modeling is desirable. Good programming skills (C++, Python, Matlab, etc.) are required. Experience with commercial finite element programs (Abaqus, Ansys, Nastran, or similar) for nonlinear analysis is an advantage. Excellent command of English is advantageous, communications and presentation skills are important.
