Jobbeschreibung

Your tasks

Offering new functionalities, spintronics devices are expected to outperform the conventional semiconductor-based electronics in terms of scaling, power consumption, and data processing speed. The development of such spintronics devices relies on fundamental knowledge of spin textures of various solid-state systems, which can be achieved with spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy ARPES. A revolutionary development in this field is the spin detector iMott, combining spin-selective Mott scattering with imaging-type electrons optics. Boosting the detection efficiency up to four orders of magnitude, the iMott allows expansion of spin-resolved studies to previously inaccessible systems such as buried heterostructures, magnetic impurities, and novel topological phases. In this project, you will push the iMott from its existing prototype to a fully functional instrument, and use it to investigate a number of actual spintronics materials. You will conduct experiments at the and the beamlines of the SLS. These two advanced spectroscopic facilities will give you unique research possibilities in fundamental and applied solid-state physics. Besides your own research, you will be involved in support of external users and benefit from scientific interactions with them. You will be embedded in the PSI's enthusiastic scientific community and receive the PhD degree from the EPFL.

Your profile

You have a Master degree in solid state physics or materials science. You have a good knowledge of solid-state physics and hands-on skills with a scientific instrumentation. Experience with electron spectroscopies will be an advantage. You are interested in constructing and operating advanced scientific instrumentation, and enjoy working within a motivated scientific team. Excellent skills in oral and written English are essential in the international environment of the PSI.
