Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Group for Trace-Element and Micro-Analysis at ETH Zurich has an open position for a Post-Doctoral fellow in the field of Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry.

Project background

New ICPMS instrumentation is currently being developed in our laboratories. A new concept employing a downwards vertical ICP source is being established to allow droplets to be introduced into the ion source independent of their size and a microwave-induced nitrogen plasma ion source (MICAP) is characterized for applications in atomic mass spectrometry using quadrupole-based and time-of-flight mass spectrometers.

Job description

The post doctoral fellow shall actively participate in both projects by designing experimental strategies, suggesting and developing hardware modifications and critical evaluation of the experimental results. The projects will be pursued in collaboration and with supervision of 1-2 doctoral students in the research group.

The position is funded for a period of 24 months with a possibility of extension.

Experimental work will be carried out in the facilities of the Group of Trace-Element and Micro-Analysis at the ETH Hönggerberg Campus. We will provide state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure, a creative and supportive working environment, and access to excellent workshops.

Your profile

The candidate should hold a Doctorate or comparable degree in analytical chemistry or a related field. Experience or strong interest in ICPMS-based element and isotope analyses is required alongside with interest in hands-on instrument modifications. The project will include modification and optimization hardware designs in collaboration with the institute’s excellent workshops. A background in mass spectrometry fundamentals and hardware, as well as fluid dynamics with basic skills in numerical modelling using e.g. the Ansys software package or similar are distinct advantages.

We expect a motivated candidate, interested in working in an established, team-oriented, international research group with a strong interdisciplinary orientation. The PI will in particular support applicants aiming for an academic career and planning to seek individual support from national and international funding agencies.
