Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.
The Group for Trace-Element and Micro-Analysis at ETH Zurich has an open position for a doctoral student in the project microwave plasma mass spectrometry.
Within this project, a microwave-induced plasma ion source (MICAP) shall be used and characterized for applications in atomic mass spectrometry using quadrupole-based and time-of-flight mass spectrometers.
A prototype “MICAP” ion source has been developed in collaboration with Radom Corp. (USA) and is currently under investigation for various applications in element- and isotope-analytical applications. The source utilizes new technologies for plasma generation making it ideally suited for atomic mass spectrometry purposes. While being substantially more cost effective in operation in comparison with conventional Ar-based ICP sources, initial experiments showed that the performance figures were found to be closely matching. It is thus of high interest to further explore the capabilities of this new technology in real-world applications.
The project is targeted at investigating the fundamental properties of such an ion source with respect to detection capabilities, including sensitivity, formation of spectral interferences and matrix effects. It shall decipher the key performance figures for a wide range of applications and different sample introduction methods.
Experimental work will be carried out in the facilities of the Group of Trace Element- and Micro-Analysis at the ETH Hönggerberg Campus. We will provide state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure, a creative, supportive working environment and access to excellent workshops.
The candidate holds a MSc or comparable degree in analytical chemistry or a related field and has a strong interest in ICPMS-based element and isotope analytical methods. The project may also include modification and optimization hardware designs in collaboration with the institute’s excellent workshops.
We expect a motivated candidate, interested in working in an established, team-oriented, international research group with a strong interdisciplinary orientation.
She or he is expected to be fluent in one of the Swiss official languages or English at first language level.
