Postdoctoral Research Position Characterization of SARS-CoV-2 membrane proteins by solid-state NMR in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, temporary

The Solid-State NMR group of Beat H. Meier at ETH Zurich () seeks applications for a post-doctoral position each, in the context of an SNF-funded common project with the Protein Solid-State NMR group of Anja Böckmann at the Molecular Microbiology and Structural Biochemistry Unit at the MMSB CNRS/University Lyon ().

Both labs have a longstanding collaboration in biophysics using solid-state NMR as major method to study insoluble molecular assemblies, including protein fibrils, molecular machines as transporters and helicases, and large protein assemblies as viral capsids and envelopes. Competences in the two groups largely overlap, but show a focus in Lyon on biochemical methods for NMR sample preparation, and in Zurich on advanced proton-detected MAS NMR methods.

The project is on structural studies of SARS-CoV-2 membrane proteins, including structural and accessory proteins. We are looking for a motivated researcher to apply state-of-the art solid-state NMR methods for the analysis of these proteins. She/he is expected to work hand in hand with her/his colleague in Lyon who will focus on the biochemical aspects of the project, including cell-free protein synthesis.

Job description

The primary responsibilities for the postdoctoral researcher are to:

  • Perform fast MAS proton-detected NMR experiments using spectrometers at 1200 and 850 MHz proton resonance frequency.
  • Find optimum conditions for obtaining good spectra.
  • Prepare samples at different lipid-protein ratios.
  • Develop approaches for structure determination.

The position is initially for 1 year, with the possibility of extension. The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment, with contacts to our partner in Lyon, France. The working language of the group is English.

Your profile
  • PhD in physics, chemistry or biology
  • Prior research experience with solid-state NMR
  • Prior research experience in biochemistry/biophysics is not required but is viewed positively
