Job Description 6500! That’s the number of associates in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.
The Research Scientist position is open in the Biochemistry group of the Oncology department. The task of this group is to contribute to the identification of chemical entities that will become the anticancer drugs of the future.

The purpose of this role is to identify and validate molecular targets that play a key role in a particular disease process. Studies origin, relationship, development, anatomy, functions, and chemicalprocesses of living organisms. Analyzes materials to determine their toxic or nontoxic properties, binding and efficacy.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Detailed experimental planning and conducting of scientific experiments in the frame of research projects with emphasis on molecular biology and biochemical experiments and their independent planning: cloning, mutagenesis, library generation, protein expression and protein purification in small scale and large scale.
• Efficiently manage and maintain the technical operations of the laboratory, technical equipment and reagents.
• Writing and maintenance of electronic laboratory protocols keeping them up to date according to the current guidelines.
• Practical supervision of apprentices (master teachers), trainees and students.
• Design and perform high-quality experiments independently and efficiently, deliver in time and accurately interpret data, demonstrating expertise in downstream processing and characterization of proteins.
• Consolidate, report data and present in context as needed.
• Read scientific publications and apply concepts and methods practically.


Minimum requirements Desirable requirements:

• Biology/Biotechnology Diploma (master) or training (Federal Certificate of Proficiency) as a Biology Laboratory Technician (Pharmaceutical Biology) with advanced training, especially in molecular biology and protein biochemistry, >3 years of experience. At least HFP or equivalent higher education.
• Proficiency in all general molecular biology and cell biology techniques (handling of DNA, RNA, protein, phages, viruses, bacteria, eukaryotic cells incl. insect cells; PCR, cloning, library generation, sequencing, blotting, immunological detection).
• Mastery of all general protein biochemical techniques (handling of proteins, purifications (affinity, HIC, IEX, SEC) manually and with FPLC, analysis (SDS-PAGE, HPLC, LC-MS).
• Independently plan and design laboratory work in accordance with the objectives of diverse research programs and the field.
• Contribute to the design of research programs in oncology research.
• Adherence to all safety guidelines in accordance with HSE.
