Ph.D. position on Post-Tensioned/Prestressed 3D Printed Concrete Slabs in Dübendorf

EMPA (European Master of Public Administration Consortium) is a network of European schools, that offer master programs in public administration.

Jobbeschreibung

The project is in collaboration with and .

Project description and tasks:
In this Ph.D. project, an advanced floor slab system consisting of post-tensioned 3D printed concrete formwork and cast-in-place reinforced concrete topping will be developed. The project aims to use 3D printed concrete as permanent formwork for slabs in place of conventional temporary formwork made up of timber or steel. The 3D printed concrete will be post-tensioned using BBR cables to improve the structural performance of the formwork. In addition, topology optimization tools will be implemented to optimize the geometry of the formwork to manufacture slabs with free-form geometries. The project tasks include:
  • Material characterization and rheological studies of the concrete mix for 3D printing of formwork
  • Conceptual and experimental studies on possible embedment of post-tensioning/prestressing cables during the manufacturing of 3D printed concrete formwork
  • Design and development of topology optimization tool for 3D printed concrete
  • Large-scale experiments to assess the structural behaviour of the developed slab system
  • Finite element modelling

The prospective student will be enrolled at the doctoral school of ETHZ. Prof. Dr David Kammer is the Ph.D. thesis director and Prof. Dr Benjamin Dillenburger is the Ph.D. co-supervisor.
Your profile and selection criteria:
The candidate should have a Masters degree in Structural Engineering with a strong background in 3D concrete printing. Experience or interest in developing post-tensioning techniques for digital fabrication is also essential. Additional skills, including experience in small and large-scale experimental testing, finite element modelling, and knowledge of structural topology optimization, would be an advantage. A strong desire and motivation to find cutting-edge and innovative solutions in structural engineering are essential. The candidate should have a clear interest in working in an application-oriented research environment in close collaboration with our industrial and academic partners. Good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

We offer a multifaceted and challenging PhD position for 48 months in a modern research environment with excellent infrastructure. The PhD student will have an office at Empa Dubendorf. The position is available as soon as possible but should be filled by no later than July 1, 2022.
