Postdoc position in Urban Data and Modeling Science in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Chair of Hydrology and Water Resources Management of ETH Zurich, in the context of the project “Comparative Ecology of Cities at the Future Cities Lab Global (FCL Global)” has a vacancy for one Postdoc position in Urban Data and Modeling Science.

You will be offered a Postdoc position for 24 months. The contract conditions follow the ETH regulations. Zurich is an attractive city rated very high in terms of life quality and living standards. Salary is extremely competitive in comparison to analogue positions elsewhere.

Job description

The projectComparative Ecology of Cities: Understanding Patterns, Processes and Properties of Cities to Improve Urban Conditions” is centred on the proposition that urban pattern-process-function relationships provide valuable knowledge to advance the science of urban planning. The project builds upon emerging theoretical and empirical evidence that patterns of human settlement systems (urban patterns) shape social and ecological processes (urban processes), and such processes, in turn, dictate the key demands of urban living such as social relations, mobility, economic exchanges, biophysical environment, ecological conditions, etc. (urban functions). The project will investigate such pattern-process-function relationships across several cities to develop generalizations that can be used as urban planning and design principles to guide sustainable urban development.

Your profile

We are looking for an individual with a PhD degree preferably in a field such as Urban Science, Urban Climate, Urban Hydrology, or a related discipline that includes specific and broad knowledge in the areas of quantitative analyses of urban environments. People with an interdisciplinary background are particularly welcome, but knowledge of data analytics techniques (machine learning, or advanced statistical techniques) and/or processed-based numerical modelling tools to simulate aspects of urban ecohydrology, microclimate and energy budget, and urban pollution is preferred. The familiarity with analysis and integration of existing large datasets of urban properties and patterns, remote sensing products, and numerical model outputs is an additional asset. You will be responsible for completing scientific tasks, working closely with other team members and assisting the project coordinator in the integration of the different tasks of the “Comparative Ecology of Cities” project.

Organisational and oral/written communication skills are a prerequisite. Excellent command of English is essential. Quantitative and modelling skills, including programming skills, are expected. Developing and publishing scientific results is the main focus of the position.
