The Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) programme of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a world-wide and long-term endeavour driven by the need to understand and control the increasing influence of human activity on the global atmosphere. Empa operates a Quality Assurance / Science Activity Centre (QA/SAC) as a contribution to GAW's quality management framework. We advice and support the operation and maintenance of long-term atmospheric composition observations world-wide. Within this context, we intend to strengthen our support of worldwide stations with respect to data screening and timely detection of measurement artefacts. Therefore, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoc experienced in data science and machine learning to join our team.
Your tasks
- Analysis of long-term time series of atmospheric composition data; development and application of data-driven approaches for timely data review and detection of suspicious measurements through the identification of characteristic features, the prediction of future data, and the comparison with recent data.
- Development of a user interface for world-wide station operators.
- Support and training of station operators before, during and after the roll-out process.
- Dissemination of the achievements through presentations at conferences, peer-reviewed publications and interaction with GAW data managers.
Required qualifications
- PhD degree in data sciences, mathematics, physics, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering or a related discipline.
- Excellent programming skills.
- Basic knowledge and interest in atmospheric sciences.
- Excellent communication skills and intercultural experience.
- Fluency in English is required; basic knowledge of German is desirable.
The postdoc will benefit from an inspiring international environment and will closely collaborate with station operators at various continents.
