The Neuroscience, Ophthalmology and Rare Diseases (NORD) Translational Area (DTA) of Roche Pharmaceutical Research & Early Development (pRED) has openings for Ph.D. traineeships (3 years’ duration) within the Ophthalmology Discovery department located in Basel, Switzerland. This group of over 30 Roche scientists is focused on the clinical translation of therapeutic approaches for eye diseases, including age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.

We are seeking an exceptional and highly motivated doctoral-level student currently enrolled or accepted to enroll in a Ph.D. – granting program at a University located in Zurich, Bern, or Basel, Switzerland to join our international team in an outstanding and competitive scientific environment. The student will work in Basel full-time at the Roche laboratories and will be a part of the Ophthalmology team, gaining significant exposure to drug development, biomarker discovery, and clinical translation.

The student, in collaboration with an academic mentor at their home institution, will devise a doctoral thesis workplan focused on one or more of the following areas:

  • Protein biomarker discovery in ocular tissues, fluids
  • Ocular imaging technology and biomarker discovery and validation in animal models and/or patients
  • Drug discovery using molecular profiling of diseased tissues from patients and animal models, using state-of-the-art techniques including RNA sequencing, flow cytometry, and high resolution microscopy (STORM).
  • Validation of potential drug targets using tissue culture and animal models of ocular diseases.
  • Investigation of emerging in vivo imaging technologies, including fluorescence lifetime imaging ophthalmoscopy (FLIO), optical coherence tomography (OCT), in vivo confocal microscopy, and contrast agent based fluorescence angiography.

You are proactive, creative and detail-oriented and you enjoy working in a divers, international team. If you bring as well as the following skills and competencies, we are looking forward to receiving your application.

  • Background in molecular biology, biochemistry, vascular biology, immunology, or related fields
  • Training in cell culture and established molecular biology techniques
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English are required
  • Experience in working with small animal models of disease is preferable
