The Position

We are seeking an outstanding candidate for this position within the Rare Disease group at Roche. The Rare Disease group is focused on discovery and development of novel therapeutics for genetically defined diseases with high unmet medical need.  The group lies within the Neuroscience, Ophthalmology and Rare Disease (NORD) Disease Translation Area (DTA), part of the Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) organization. The RiSE program (Roche Internships for Scientific Exchange) offers the most talented postgraduate students the opportunity to enhance their competencies and to gain valuable work experience with us. The position will be based in Basel, Switzerland.

The focus of the position will be to explore gene replacement approaches for a rare neuromuscular disorder. The goal will be to optimize and establish molecular and cellular screening platforms to monitor transfection/infection efficiency of gene expression. 

During the internship your tasks will include:

  • Conduct laboratory research including establishment, optimization and validation of molecular screening assays (e.g. qPCR, ELISA, WB, ICC)
  • Culturing of human cell lines,  including transfection/viral infection
  • Be part of the discovery group and be involved in a small team composed of 2 research associates exploring gene therapy preclinically
  • Reporting progress to a discovery project leader scientist who will also be your mentor and supervisor
  • Active problem solving, contribution to team’s knowledge

Moreover you are/have:

  • Enrolled in PhD or medical degree program at a university
  • A high level of motivation and interest
  • A strong background in molecular cell biology with prior research experience in gene therapy and AAV biology
  • Experienced to work with different cell culture systems, preferably according to BSL2 requirements
  • Background in neuromuscular diseases is a plus
  • High level of English speaking and writing skills
