Student Internship for Particle and Formulation Characterization in Pharmaceutical Development of Small Molecules (from May 2019, 6 months) - RISM in Basel

As part of the global technical development organization, we are responsible for the analytical research and development for new drug substances and drug products, at the Roche Basel site. This includes the development, optimization and validation of state-of-the-art analytical characterization methods. Our responsibilities is also the evaluation and implementation of suitable new analytical technologies and methodologies to support efficient the formulation and the manufacturing process development.

You will support Particle and Formulation Characterization group in collaboration with Process Analytical Technology group in obtaining a deeper understanding of the detection and quantification of  the polymorphic API Forms in the final drug product (DP). After the comparison of different measurement techniques (Solid State NMR, XRPD, NIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Raman Imaging),. You will develop, establish and correlate relevant analytical methods for the solid form determination and establish adequate workflow.


Your responsibilities are:

  • Perform a literature review to comprehend the challenges of polymorphic properties and analytical method specifities in Drug Product
  • Plan, organize and perform experiments independently as well as collaboratively
  • Evaluate and compare different analytical methods on active development projects for the elaboration of a workflow for the investigation of the polymorphism of API in the final drug product (DP)
  • Summarize and document the results and present them scientifically in oral presentations and written reports

You are a student enrolled in the subject of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Material Sciences, Experimental Physics or similar and have an interest in solid state material properties and manufacturing processes.

Your further profile for this position:

  • Strong analytical skills
  • Aptitude for experimental work, hands-on approach, reliable and accurate working style in a pharmaceutical environment
  • Drive for results, a problem-solving oriented personality and a high level of motivation
  • Expertise in particulate material properties and/or experience with solid state analytics (e.g. particle size distribution, specific surface area, mechanical properties, Imaging, flowability…) constitutes a plus
  • Good knowledge of MS-Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), knowledge of data analysis tools are a plus
  • Good conversation and witting skills in German and English language
