PhD candidate (100%) for modelling, optimising, and designing advanced pulse generators for future accelerator systems in Zürich

This research group is looking for you!

Jobbeschreibung

The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering performs international leading research on power electronic converter systems required for example in future energy distribution systems for integrating renewable energy sources or in traction applications/electric mobility. A further research focus is on solid state pulse modulators for medical applications (computer tomography/cancer treatment) and accelerators (CERN). For a new industry related research project on future accelerator systems, we are recruiting a
We are looking for outstanding, highly motivated people interested in pursuing Ph.D. research in the multi-disciplinary area of pulse generators (modulators) for future accelerator systems. These pulse modulators are key subsystems for accelerators in basic physics research performed for example at CERN, DESY, ENEA or ESS. Moreover, such modulators are required in medical applications as for example computer tomography or cancer treatment. Driven by future system requirements increasingly high pulse voltages are required, which demand advanced system concepts and comprehensive models for optimising the pulse performance. There, key enablers are advanced concepts and detailed models for pulse transformers, which must generate pulse output voltages up to 700kV for a few microseconds with ultra short rise and fall times. The design and the optimisation of these pulse transformers are one of the core topics of the project. For verifying the new concepts and the models, you will also design, build, and operate a full-scale prototype system in cooperating with an industry partner. In our lab, you can expect a challenging and scientifically highly exciting full-time position in a dynamic, international team at one of the world-wide leading technical universities. Furthermore, we strongly support participation at international conferences and offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits as well as outstanding research and laboratory facilities for your experiments.
We look forward to receiving your online application including a comprehensive CV, your B.S. and M.S. transcripts, electronic copies of the B.Sc./M.Sc. thesis and/or publications (if available) and names/adresses of references.
