PhD position: Functional wood coatings in Zürich

A sufficient weathering durability as well as an attractive visual appearance are basic requirements for a successful application of wood as a construction material for external building envelopes. Nanotechnology offers new opportunities to improve the efficiency and functionality of wood coating systems.

We are seeking for an outstanding, highly motivated candidate with a strong background in synthesis of nanoparticles as well as chemistry, development and realization of coatings, preferably wood coatings to take up a challenging PhD position in the area of waterborne coating technology. The project will focus on the development and realization of functionalized wood coatings for outdoor application.

Your Tasks

• Synthesis of nanoparticles that can add new functionality to wood coatings
• Development of functional waterborne wood coatings
• Characterization of properties, functionalities and durability of the developed coatings on wood

Your Profile

• Master degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science preferably in Nanotechnology or similar fields 
• Previous experience in synthesis and modification of nanoparticles and their characterization

A basic understanding of wood and wood technology is advantageous, but not a requirement. We expect a track record of high-quality scientific publications. Very good communication and writing skills in English are required, good German language skills are desirable.
