PhD student in Nonlinear Photonics for Active Metal-Oxides Metasurfaces in Zürich

This research group is looking for you!

Jobbeschreibung

The Optical Nanomaterial Laboratory at the Physics Department of ETH Zurich is looking for a PhD student in Nonlinear Photonics for Active Metal-Oxides Metasurfaces. The quest of materials with no losses in a broad optical range and high energy conversion efficiencies is still open for the development of new nanotechnologies in optoelectronics and photonics. In our group, we use metal-oxides ferroelectric materials, such as barium titanate or lithium niobate, because of their wide bandgap for a broad transparent window, second-order optical nonlinearities, strong electro-optic effects and high damage threshold.

This PhD project aims to fabricate miniature optoelectronic devices from barium titanate and lithium niobate thin films or nanoparticles. Most current flat photonic structures are passive, here the goal is to create multifunctional sub-wavelength devices that can be actively tuned without changing the hardware design. The PhD project will also explore further functionalities of metasurfaces to control optical quantum emitters. The project involves the fabrication of metasurfaces by top-down and bottom-up methods, the optical characterization using custom-built setups, numerical modelling and the development of flat photonic devices with nonlinear materials for classical and quantum applications.
We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents: a cover letter, CV, transcripts of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and contact information of two referees. Please apply exclusively via the following link: . Applications sent by e-mail or post will not be considered.
