The Innovation Center Virtual Reality at ETH Zurich is offering a PhD position within an international research project, in which also industry is involved. The goal is to develop a Virtual Reality based software to automatically assess and classify manual activities in an assembly process. Here, a wide range of activities such as human-machine interaction, walking or multi-user collaboration should be easily assessed without the need of physical mockups. This will tremendously reduce the time demand for planning and optimizing manual assembly processes. While a user is walking in a virtual environment, his/her tracking data will be captured, and deep learning approaches will be used to categorize his movements into predefined classes. For comparison, also real setups will be analyzed using image segmentation and classification algorithms.

Job description

A tentative PhD candidate will be interested in one or more of the following topics: Image analysis, deep learning, visualization, and virtual reality. Further, here should be an interest in developing new algorithms and systems, and to test them in subsequent user studies, first in a lab environment and then on-site at the industry partner’s manufacturing hall.

You will further be involved in teaching duties. You will assist in multiple lectures and their administration, handle student exercises, and students' work on Bachelor and Master level.

Your profile

The ideal candidate holds a Master degree in either Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science. You are interested in solving tasks in a multidisciplinary research field of Computer Vision, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science, which is also highly relevant to industry. You have excellent programming skills in C++, while modelling in Blender, working with Unity or other VR experience is a plus. Moreover, we are looking for a person with strong communication and interpersonal skills for presenting your research to an international community. Fluency in English is a must, while basic knowledge in German is welcome.
