Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.
The Chair of Seismic Design and Analysis of the Institute of Structural Engineering (IBK) at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich is seeking a PhD Student in the Field of Earthquake Engineering to start on April 1st, 2020.
The student will be funded by our recently awarded ERC Starting Grant aiming to use 3D printing technologies to study the seismic behavior of masonry structures.
The seismic behavior of masonry is not yet understood sufficiently. In this project we will 3D print masonry structures at a small scale, we will modulate their mechanical properties by controlling the micro-geometry of the printed material, and we will test the printed specimens in the under construction new ETH centrifuge. The goal is to a) drastically reduce the cost of shaking table testing via using very small scale specimens and b) statistically validate our numerical models against not solitary, but multiple tests. Within this project, we will also test low cost seismic isolation solutions for masonry.
The salary and general working conditions are internationally highly competitive and according to and will be the Standard (Level 1) ETH doctoral student.
Successful applicants should hold an MSc in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) and have a strong background in Mechanics and Structural Engineering. Excellent applicants from Geotechnical Engineering will also be considered. Proficiency in written and oral English is required – German speaking skills are not necessary. Most importantly, candidates should enjoy research and be self-motivated.
We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents: letter of motivation, CV, transcripts, diplomas, and contact details of referees. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
The position is open until filled. We will start reviewing applications on October 1st.
