Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, temporary

The Chair of Seismic Design and Analysis of the Institute of Structural Engineering (IBK) at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich is seeking a PhD Student in the Field of Earthquake Engineering to start on April 1st, 2020.

Project background

The student will be funded by our recently awarded ERC Starting Grant aiming to use 3D printing technologies to study the seismic behavior of masonry structures.

The seismic behavior of masonry is not yet understood sufficiently. In this project we will 3D print masonry structures at a small scale, we will modulate their mechanical properties by controlling the micro-geometry of the printed material, and we will test the printed specimens in the under construction new ETH centrifuge. The goal is to a) drastically reduce the cost of shaking table testing via using very small scale specimens and b) statistically validate our numerical models against not solitary, but multiple tests. Within this project, we will also test low cost seismic isolation solutions for masonry.

Job description

The salary and general working conditions are internationally highly competitive and according to and will be the Standard (Level 1) ETH doctoral student.
