Postdoctoral position on “Large Eddy Simulations of hydrogen combustion in gas turbines” in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, temporary

The Laboratory of Combustion and Acoustics for Power & Propulsion Systems (CAPS) in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering invites applications for a Post-doctoral position in large-eddy simulation (LES) modelling of turbulent reacting flows.

Project background

The goal of the research project is to investigate flame flashback at gas turbine relevant conditions through modelling and experiments. The joint computational-experimental project is in collaboration with the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), where the high-pressure test rig is located and where laser-based measurements are conducted for model validation. The objective of the computational activities is to advance LES modelling capabilities of near-wall flame propagation in complex turbulent swirling flows with a focus on hydrogen-methane fuel mixtures. LES simulations will be conducted to improve the fundamental understanding of flame flashback and to probe their capability to correctly predict flashback limits in a practical swirl burner geometry.

Job description

The PostDoc will be responsible for all computational activities within the project including coordination with the experimental campaigns. As a PostDoc, you will further apply your LES modelling expertise to other research activities at CAPS such as investigations on thermo-acoustic instabilities and auto-ignition stabilized flames. The simulations will be performed using the AVBP solver for turbulent reacting flows developed at CERFACS, France. The research outcome is expected to be published in major scientific journals.

Your profile

Applicants for this position are expected to have an excellent PhD in the field of LES modelling for turbulent reacting flow. We seek candidates who have prior experience with the solver AVBP. We are looking for highly motivated, committed, and creative individuals, able to work in a team and with excellent communication skills. Working in a top-level research environment with advanced laboratory infrastructure, the candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop their research abilities. The two-year position with the possibility for an extension is available starting immediately.
