Our Research Group for Exoplanets and Habitability at the Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics develops infrared instruments for the world's largest telescopes, both on ground and in space. One of our major running projects includes the development of a large cryostat for the METIS instrument for the European Extremely Large Telescope, the biggest telescope on earth to be constructed by 2025.

Job description

The candidate would support the design and analysis efforts for this work-package in collaboration with the cryostat systems engineer, the international instrument team, the local engineering office and industrial partners. Further tasks may include thermal-mechanical design, development and test activities for other project involvements and the in-house infrastructure. The candidate will report to the head of instrumentation and will be fully integrated in the research group. This position is limited for two years, with the possibility for extension.

Your profile

Besides a university master degree in mechanical engineering and work experience of at least 2 years in instrument development, the candidate shall demonstrate proficiency in both structural analyses using ANSYS and mechanical CAD designs. Further skills in cryogenic and or opto-/mechanical engineering or astronomical instrumentation are of advantage. The candidate must be fluent in English and ideally in German and should have distinct interpersonal and communication skills.
