Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship is located in the Transport Facilitation and Economics Section, Sustainable Transport Division, TIR (Transport Internationaux Routiers) Secretariat, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe based in Geneva.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the IT Team Leader, the intern is expected to contribute to the work of the Sustainable Transport Division, depending on priorities, as follows:

a) Participation in the Continuous Integration/Delivery project – Contribute to the development of improvements on existing plans. Contribute to the creation of new plans.

b) Participation in the improvement of the Test coverage of the ITDB and/or of the eTIR international system – Design and implement new test cases. Monitor the regular execution of test cases and investigate execution failures. Liaise with the developers to find the best way to correct problems.

c) Participation in the Knowledge Management System (KMS) – Contribute in improving the current technical documentation stored on the KMS. Liaise with developers and suggest improvements to the IT Team.

d) Participation in Communication – Contribute to the current communication efforts. Study existing data and list potential inconsistencies and errors. Prepare data visualization reports. Propose suggestions for improvement.

e) Participation in the Non repudiation system – Study the requirements and the complaints procedure. Draft proposals for use cases in designing a user interface. Contribute in designing and implementing this user interface.

f) Participation in the Logging system – Study the existing system. Monitor logs and identify potential problems. Liaise with developers to find the best way to correct problems. Suggest improvements to the IT Team.

g) Participation in Information Security related aspects – Study existing security controls and UN standards. Contributes to the improvement of these security controls. Suggest improvements terms of Information Security to the IT Team.

h) Participation in improving the eTIR Specifications – Study the existing version of the eTIR Specifications. Liaise with the IT Team to verify and validate any uncertain statement. Use the appropriate tools to contribute in writing the missing parts of the eTIR Specifications.

Education

To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

- Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); (c) Have graduated with a university degree, as defined above, and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;

For this internship, studies in information technology, computer science or equivalent are required

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No professional work experience is required for participation in the Internship Programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.

The Internship Programme is guided by Administrative Instruction ST/AI/2014/1 of the United Nations issued by the Under-Secretary-General for Management. Interns are considered type I gratis personnel. They are not staff members. The United Nations does not financially remunerate interns. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibilities of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns work five days per week. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical insurance coverage and provide a medical certificate of good health. The United Nations is not responsible for any claims by any parties where the loss of or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by the actions or omission of action by the interns during their internship.
