KOF Swiss Economic Institute is the leading institute for research in applied economics in Switzerland (). The affiliated Chair of Applied Economics: Innovation and Internationalisation pursues research mainly in the areas of applied international and public economics and in applied econometrics. The interaction between international economics and labour economics is an interesting field of research. We are looking for a PhD student who possibly has an interest in this interaction. Core competencies include the use of empirical methods for micro data, big data, and some versatility in the use of software packages such as STATA, Python or Matlab.
The candidate needs to have an interest in empirical work and the use of data as well as tools for the analysis of many cross sectional units (employee, firms, firm-employee matches) which are repeatedly observed over time. The first year of the PhD will be almost entirely devoted to do the necessary course work at the core of economics (macro, micro and econometrics) and the candidate should also continue with some field-course work in the second year. Overall, we envisage that a successful candidate can complete her PhD within 4-5 years.
We are looking for a highly motivated and outstanding young researcher who is interested in pursuing a PhD with an emphasis on applied empirical and quantitative work in economics. You should have the potential to conduct high-quality research and have a clear interest in subjects such as labour economics, international economics, or industrial organiation. Rigorous statistics training in causal inference and/or machine learning, and a strong command of Stata, Python, or Matlab are desired. An excellent command of English is required.
