PhD position in Composite Metamaterials Processing in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, temporary

A PhD position in Composite Metamaterials Processing is available in the Laboratory of Composite Materials and Adaptive Structures (CMASLab) at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT).

Project background

CMASLab is interested in developing scalable technologies for adaptable aerospace structures. Mechanical metamaterials composed of highly anisotropic composite materials are a promising approach towards the realization of structures that are simultaneous lightweight, deformable, and load carrying. However, this methodology necessitates the development of efficient and scalable manufacturing processes capable of creating complex metamaterial geometries.

Job description

The objective of the research is to leverage advanced manufacturing approaches for the creation of complex geometries made of ultra-thin fiber reinforced polymer composites. The work will address the efficiency and scalability of the developed processes in order to provide a path towards technology transfer to the aerospace industry. To support this goal, the developed methodology will be applied to a meter-scale demonstrator of a shape adaptable aerospace structure. The challenges associated with the project are expected to be the integration of additive manufacturing techniques with composite fabrication, achieving high composite quality, and reducing process complexity. The candidate is expected to collaborate with other members of CMASLab working on the development of the metamaterial geometries.

Your profile

To strengthen our international and interdisciplinary research team, we are looking for an outstanding candidate with a degree in engineering (mechanical, aerospace) or an equivalent research related field. Applicants should have a strong background in fiber reinforced polymers composites as well as experience with their fabrication. Furthermore, applicants with experience in the development of additive manufacturing technologies are sought. Applicants should be interested in a combined experimental and numerical approach to the research. Prospective candidates will be part of an international and interdisciplinary research team and expected to be highly motivated, passionate about science, and collaborative.
