Postdoctoral researcher, structural mass spectrometry of protein-RNA complexes in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, temporary

The research group of Dr. Alexander Leitner at the Institute of Molecular Systems Biology at ETH Zurich () offers a position for a postdoctoral researcher in the area of structural mass spectrometry of protein-RNA complexes. The group is embedded within the laboratory of Prof. Paola Picotti and focuses on the development of mass spectrometry-based structural proteomics methods, in particular cross-linking strategies, and their applications in structural and systems biology.

Project background

The research project is part of the National Research Program “Covid-19” funded by the Swiss Federal Council ().

Job description

The project aims to study interactions between proteins and RNA of coronaviruses (especially SARS-CoV-2) using mass spectrometry in combination with classical structural biology techniques, especially NMR spectroscopy. For this purpose, CLIR-MS, a photochemical cross-linking strategy in combination with mass spectrometry analysis will be used (Dorn et al., Nat. Methods 2017). The project is carried out in collaboration with the laboratory of Prof. Frédéric Allain (), with whom we developed CLIR-MS. The position in the Leitner group will have a strong focus on mass spectrometry-based methods.

Your profile

We are looking for candidates with a solid background in mass spectrometry-based proteomics, ideally with experience in structural applications of MS. Applications from researchers with a background in RNA and/or structural biology with a strong interest in learning and applying mass spectrometry in their research will also be considered. Experience in programming/scripting (Python, R) is an ideal complementary skill. Interest in working in a multidisciplinary project is essential, as is fluency in English, the working language of the lab. German language skills are not required.

The position is initially funded for two years with a salary in accordance with ETH rates, and the candidate must be able to start the position by October 1, 2020.
