The Department of Biomedicine (DBM) belongs to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Basel, Switzerland. The DBM promotes basic and translational biomedical research at the highest international level. Our interdisciplinary PhD program is associated with the PhD program in Molecular and Cellular Biology offered by the Biozentrum. Around 120 PhD students enrolled in the PhD program of the Faculty of Science perform their thesis in one of the 60 research labs.
The Cell Adhesion research group, part of the Department of Biomedicine, offers two PhD-student positions (100%) in the field of Cell Biology. We study the role of intercellular adhesion in fundamental processes such as differentiation and tissue homeostasis to identify novel approaches for the treatment of severe diseases caused by dysfunctional cell-cell contact.
Your position
The projects investigate the contribution of cadherin-based adhesion receptors to epidermal differentiation and homeostasis. The students will apply 2D and 3D cell cultures together with genetically modified mouse model approaches to test the impact of altered adhesion on cellular and tissue level. You will use innovative imaging techniques such as AFM force spectroscopy, super-resolution microscopy and live cell imaging.
