Postdoctoral Position in Computational Astrophysics (Planet Formation) in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, temporary

A 2+1 year postdoctoral position is available at Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics, Department of Physics, within the new group of Prof. Judit Szulagyi. The position is in computer simulations of planet-formation, funded through an ERC Strating grant (Planet- and Moon-Factory; PI: J. Szulagyi). The desired starting date is Sep. 2021, but it is flexible within a few-months-range.

Project background

The project is attacking the questions of planet formation, specifically how the observed diversity of planets is linked to the local disk environment where the planets are forming. The study will use hydrodynamical simulations to measure how planetary accretion rate is depending on the characteristic of the local disk environment.

In our research group we are using various computational methods (hydrodynamical simulations, population synthesis, N-body simulations, radiative transfer etc.) to study processes that takes place in various astrophysical disks. The postdoc will be part of a vibrant research atmosphere with numerous groups working on various aspects of planetary science related research in ETH Zurich and within the Switzerland-wide large collaboration of NCCR PlanetS.

Job description

You will be responsible to carry out the research project, and expected to participate in the group's activities, including the supervision of students. You will carry out 3D (radiative) thermo-hydrodynamical simulations with dust+gas with an exsisting code (written in C language), and further develop that code to add additional relevant physics, e.g. self-gravity. The salary will be in accordance with the with increase every year. Salary-scale is fixed, non-negotiable.

Your profile
  • PhD by the starting date of the position in quantitative sciences/engineering (e.g., astrophysics, physics, computer science, computational science or a related field)
  • Programming skills

Nice to have experience in one or more of the following:

  • Proven record in large code development
  • Experience in astrophysical research
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics simulations with/without radiative transfer, with/without self-gravity
