Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.
The Atmospheric Physics group at the (IAC) – ETH Zurich invites applications for a 3-year to 3.5-year PhD position on cloud seeding to reduce hail damage. This research topics remains a challenge because demonstrating the effectiveness of cloud seeding has been hampered by the large natural variability of hailstorms in the past.
The PhD work will be conducted in collaboration with Baloise insurance, who purchased an aircraft and has continuously been seeding developing thunderstorm clouds in Switzerland for the last three summers. In order to demonstrate (or falsify) the success of reducing hail damage, this PhD project will conduct model simulations with the Swiss numerical weather prediction model with and without cloud seeding and evaluate whether seeding can reduce the hail damage. The model simulations will be validated with the radar data for observed seeding events. This project offers a rare opportunity to study a practical application of cloud physics. The insights gained from this research will thus be of interest not only with regard to cloud seeding, but to the discipline as a whole.
We are looking for a PhD candidate interested in numerical modelling, data analysis and cloud physics. The position requires a MSc (or equivalent) in atmospheric/environmental sciences, physics, engineering or a related field. Sound knowledge of the English language, both oral and written is expected. A background in numerical modelling, statistical data analysis and/or programming skills is highly encouraged. The successful candidate is expected to have good communication skills, good time management skills, as well as a willingness to participate in a collaborative and supportive research environment. We specifically encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups in academia.
We look forward to receiving your online application including:
Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
Review of applications will begin December 1, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled. The start date is flexible and could begin as soon as January 2021. Please contact Prof. Ulrike Lohmann (ulrike.lohmann@env.ethz.ch, no applications) in case of questions related to the project and/or to the position.
