The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. For the Laboratory for Catalysis and Sustainable Chemistry we are looking for a

PhD Student

In situ investigation of ethylene epoxidation on silver supported nanoparticles: from catalytic process to chemical looping

Your tasks

  • Complete understanding of the scientific topic and of the main synchrotron spectroscopic techniques (Ambient Pressure X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Near Edge X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopy)
  • In situ spectroscopic characterization of a model catalytic system
  • Synthesis of silver/oxide heterogeneous catalysts
  • Complete in situ spectroscopic characterization of heterogeneous catalysts under catalytically relevant conditions and in a chemical looping cycle
  • Publish in international leading scientific journals
  • Support teaching at ETH Zürich

    Skills/Qualifications

    Your profile

  • Master degree in chemistry, physics, materials science or related
  • Background in synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts
  • Proven problem-solving skills
  • Creative, hands-on personality
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Well-developed communication skills and good command of the english language (spoken and written)
  • Knowledge in photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron techniques helpful
  • Programming skills would be an additional benefit
