The Institute for Infectious diseases (ifik) at the University of Bern provides services in diagnostics, research and teaching with regard to the clarification, pathogenesis and prevention of human infectious diseases. We are looking for a PhD student for a research project focusing on the polysaccharide capsule of S. pneumoniae. The candidate will be a member of research group of about 5 people at ifik (DOI) .

Tasks The aim of the project is to investigate the impact of different oligosaccharides on the growth and thickness of the capsule of S. pneumoniae . This study will be carried out with the latest sequencing technologies and the analysis of such data will be learned (e.g. RNAseq and 16S rRNA sequencing). Furthermore, there is the possibility to learn and develop a wide range of laboratory skills in the field of microbiology. Requirements
  • Master's degree in life science or equivalent
  • Background in microbiology and molecular biology
  • Strong interest in '-omics' technologies
  • Excellent English language skills (oral and written)
