Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.
The Group for Trace-Element and Micro-Analysis at ETH Zurich has an open position for a doctoral student in the project single-cell analytical methods.
Within this project a new downwards vertical plasma ion source will be studied in applications of atomic mass spectrometry based analyses of individual cells. This novel configuration allows for the controlled introduction of large biological cells and droplets into an ICP ion source for the determination of their elemental composition. The ion source is connected to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer to enable high-throughput, comprehensive analyses of individual cells at a rate of up to 2000 per second.
The student will investigate fundamental processes of the interaction between droplets containing individual cells or cell proxies with the new ion source configuration. To achieve highest possible sensitivity and robust operation for the determination of the elemental composition of the cells, different approaches for the introduction of individual cells (including single droplet generators and flow cytometry) will be studied in detail.
The candidate holds a MSc or comparable degree in analytical chemistry or a related field and has strong interest in ICPMS-based element and isotope analytical methods. The project may also include modification and optimization of hardware designs in collaboration with the institute’s excellent workshops.
We expect a motivated candidate, interested in working in an established, team-oriented, international research group with a strong interdisciplinary orientation.
She or he is expected to be fluent in one of the Swiss official languages or English at first language level.
