ETH Zurich is one of the leading universities of the world with a strong focus on science and engineering. In 2010 it established the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF) to do interdisciplinary research on pressing problems.In collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), SEC is undertaking a research programme on "Future Resilient Systems". The FRS addresses the challenges with critical infrastructure systems that provide essential services to modern societies, which is of particular importance to innovation-driven economies like Singapore and Switzerland. Within this framework we are announcing the following job opening. The workplace is Singapore.

Job description

The main objective of this position is to develop methods for incorporating context into all steps of knowledge discovery from movement data, including data integration, pre-processing, mining, interpretation and learning.

Tasks include:

  1. Developing semantic representations for complex contextual information
  2. Deriving methods to handle uncertainty in contextually enriched movement data
  3. Evaluating how context type affects the results of spatio-temporal analyses

This research will be specifically linked to the Cluster on "Distributed Cognition Enabled by Data Science" in the FRS-II project. The position will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Martin Raubal (PI of Cluster 3 in FRS-II).

Your profile

The ideal candidate must have an academic degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Geomatics or related fields, as well as a strong research interest in spatio-temporal analysis and mobility. A background or experience in transportation, geographic information science, machine learning, as well as data science is a significant plus. The candidate must have excellent communication skills in English (oral and writing), be team-oriented, and willing to work in an international environment.

The Singapore-ETH Centre provides a multicultural and interdisciplinary environment to researchers working on diverse themes focussed on sustainable and liveable cities, resilient urban systems, and patient-centric healthcare. The centre is home to a community of over 100 doctoral, postdoctoral and professorial researchers working in three main programmes: Future Cities Laboratory, Future Resilient Systems, and Future Health Technologies.
