The Tissue Engineering + Biofabrication laboratory in the Departement of Health Sciences & Technology is searching for a PhD student to study the role of inflammation and diet on osteoarthritis.
In a recent white paper by the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI), osteoarthritis (OA) was estimated to affect 5% of the global population, and it is the 10th highest cause of Years Lived with Disability. The strong association of OA with co-morbidities greatly increases the socioeconomic cost of the disease. Unfortunately, there is no cure or effective therapy to slow the progression of the disease. The past decade has brought a realization that OA is not just a wear-and-tear disease but also has a strong inflammatory component, which needs to be addressing in development treatment stategies. In addition, the causal links between high-fat diet, joint inflammation and disease progression need to be established.
This innovative project investigates the role of inflammatory agents in the initiation and potentiation of osteoarthritis (OA). Firstly, mass spectrometry is used to identify the bacterial components which are upregulated in synovial fluid of OA patients. We then test these species for their pro-inflammatory properties in vitro and in rodent models of OA. Progression of OA will be assessed using quantitative contrast-enhanced micro computer tomography.

You have a flair for quantitative, technical experimentation and excellent written and spoken communication skills. You are able to manage a project with several collaborators and have a Master degree in biology, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, animal science or a related field. Participation in animal studies is an essential component of this project. The start of the position is Spring 2021.
We look forward to receiving your online application with the following documents: a cover letter, CV, transcripts of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and contact information of two referees.
