Discovery Postdoctoral Fellow Musculoskeletal Diseases
Job Description The Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) is the innovation engine of Novartis. We collaborate across scientific and organizational boundaries, with a focus on powerful new technologies that facilitate the development of therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

Injuries and diseases of tendons and ligaments are some of the most common diagnoses of the musculoskeletal system. Despite this, clinically-approved disease-modifying therapies are completely unavailable for these painful and debilitating conditions. Persistence of this unmet medical need is due in large part to a poor understanding of tendon biology. Basic research of tendon development and disease is therefore essential towards developing novel and robust therapeutic strategies.

The Musculoskeletal Disease Area of NIBR is seeking a talented and motivated postdoctoral fellow to drive a multi-disciplinary project aiming to expand our knowledge of tendon biology. As a new member of a diverse tendon biology research group, you will first work closely with a primary research mentor (link) to integrate recently generated data from a genome-wide genetic screen with the external literature and “omics”-resolution molecular profiles of tendon tissue. Based on this, you will identify mechanisms in signaling, cell function, or physiology to explore in the context of connective tissue development, disease, and repair. The overarching goal will be to combine classical techniques in musculoskeletal biology with state-of-the-art methods in cell and molecular biology to determine if the identified pathways hold translational potential for clinical therapeutic intervention. Discovery Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to publish their results in leading peer-reviewed journals.

Beyond excellent scientific training, top candidates will also value experimental rigor and reproducibility; demonstrate agility to pursue questions utilizing both in vivo and in vitro techniques; exhibit courage to expand their knowledge and technical skills based on where the data lead; and, be able to work independently as well as with interdisciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant scientific community, interact with other postdoctoral fellows, and have access to supplementary mentorship by scientists from diverse disciplines including chemistry, structural biology, molecular biology, functional genomics, neurophysiology and translational medicine. The postdoctoral term is up to 4 years.
Minimum requirements What you’ll bring to the role:

• PhD or MD/PhD in cell, developmental, or regenerative biology, immunology or another relevant scientific discipline (students in the last year of their thesis work are eligible to apply).
• Strong theoretical and technical expertise in cell biology and vertebrate model systems is a must. Candidates with a broad technical skill set and willingness to expand their skills based on project evolution will be prioritized (e.g. experience with primary and immortalized cell culture, FACS, immunoblot, QPCR, immunostaining, histology, and/or CRISPR is highly desirable).
• In vivo experience with rodents. An LTK1 license (or equivalent) is advantageous.
• A good publication record with first author papers in peer-reviewed journals (publications in musculoskeletal biology are a plus).
• Excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills
• Proficiency or fluency in English
