The European Politics group in the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS) at ETH Zurich invites applications for several PhD positions and postdoctoral research positions for 4-5 years.

Project background

The positions are part of the ERC-funded research project on 'Bordering Europe: Boundary Formation in European integration (EUROBORD)' directed by Prof. Frank Schimmelfennig. The project analyses the historical development of the EU's external borders, the effects of boundary configurations and transactions on the political performance of the EU and its member states, the domestic politicization of external boundaries, and negotiations and decision-making on border policies. It combines macroquantitative analysis, natural-language processing and case studies of border policy in a variety of issue areas. Please consult . 

Job description

The successful candidates will support the Principal Investigator in the implementation of the project, and contribute to data collection and analysis. At the same time, they will have ample space to develop and pursue their own research interests within the project framework. We offer a dynamic and supportive working environment in one of the leading political science research centers in Europe. The positions come with a competitive salary in accordance with and a generous budget for training, research and travel.

Your profile

Applicants for the PhD positions should hold a Master’s degree (or be close to completion), and those for the postdoc positions should hold a PhD (or be close to completion), in political science or related disciplines relevant to the project. Applicants are expected to have strong methodological and quantitative data analysis skills. Prior training and experience in natural-language processing is a particular asset for some of the positions. Applicants are further expected to have a keen interest in theories and empirical research on European integration and politics, and a strong command of English. We are looking for candidates who combine the ability for independent research with strong teamwork and communication skills, and who are self-driven and highly motivated.
