You will support the Chemical and Analytical Development (CHAD) department,working in the Biocatalysis Team and the Continuous Manufacturing Unit (CMU).
We are looking for highly motivated Postgraduates (i.e. PhD) to support and further expand use of biocatalysis technologies in Pharmaceutical Industry.

This Postdoc position is a unique opportunity to work in the field of applied biocatalysis sciences in the Pharmaceutical industry. The rotation between the Biocatalysis Team and the CMU will allow full exposure to these cutting-edge technologies at the interface between research and development. In alignment with Novartis ambition to become a global leader in environmental sustainability, the candidate will have the chance to positively impact the carbon footprint of Novartis. The candidate will not only be able to transfer know-how into practice, but also to develop soft skills and grow internal network for a future career in the Pharmaceutical industry.

Your responsibilities:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Develop biocatalytic processes on relevant projects within Novartis portfolio across different scales.
• Be part of the Biocatalysis/ Protein engineering team to develop and optimize immobilized enzymes used in process R&D.
• Investigate various immobilization principles and evaluate their potential by applying cutting-edge robotic platforms for high-throughput screenings.
• Be part of the Continuous Manufacturing Unit (CMU) to implement and scale-up the use of immobilized enzymes in different reactor types.
• Apply kinetic modelling to predict reaction outcome and best-suited reactor type based on process parameters, thus allowing process intensification of biocatalytic steps.
• Collaborate with diverse experts in the area of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Analytics, Bioinformatics, Process Chemistry and Process Engineering.
Minimum requirements What you’ll bring to the role:
• Preferentially, a recently completed PhD at the interface of Chemistry, Biology and Process Engineering ideally with a focus on Biocatalysis.
• Experience on Enzyme Immobilization and biocatalytic process development is a strong plus.
• Expertise in flow chemistry and continuous processing is highly acknowledged as well as basic understanding of kinetic modelling.
• An excellent track record of original research and extensive experience in developing biocatalytic transformations using “state of the art” technologies. Fluency in English, additional German proficiency is a plus.
• Ready to expand own knowledge, open minded with an international outlook.
• Finally, since all work takes place in multidisciplinary project teams, strong interpersonal and communication skills are required
