The Development Economics Group (ETH-DEC) at ETH Zurich is offering a PostDoc position in Development Economics for a new research project using satellite images to study urban poverty and inequality in Africa. The starting date is 01.08.2021 (or later). The position is for two years.
Our research: We conduct research in empirical development economics, with ongoing research projects on global inequalities, health, population economics, technologies for poverty reduction, sustainable resource extraction and consumption, and evidence-informed policymaking.
Our team: We are an international team of highly motivated economists, political scientists, and data scientists interested in analyzing global inequalities and contributing to global development solutions. Our research group is closely linked to NADEL (), a multidisciplinary team focusing on linking research with practice through various teaching activities.

The main task of the position is first and foremost, to conduct high-quality research. The successful candidate will be expected to work on the research project to analyze urban inequality in Africa. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for mentoring one or two Ph.D. candidates. Teaching is encouraged but not mandatory.
Candidates have a doctorate in economics, statistics, or a related field, excellent prospects for publications, and very strong quantitative skills, particularly in machine learning methods. Applicants should be fluent in English and have experience working with remotely sensed data such as satellite images. Experience in researching low-income countries is helpful but not required. Moreover, candidates should be willing to communicate their research to the public.
