PhD Student in Wireless Power Transfer for IoT applications in null

10 - 40 Stunden pro Woche

Jobbeschreibung

Your mission

You will participate in our efforts in applied research and development of a Remote powering using radio-frequency waves for IoT applications suitable for real-world constrained embedded devices deployed in realistic propagation conditions (typically ground or airborne). Concretely, the Remote Powering Concept that you will develop will be used for powering IoT elements in the long run with the least impact on the other wireless functions, on the recyclability and “greenness” of the IoT solution and in compliance with the relevant standards and regulations. Nevertheless, we encourage the original approaches and thinking out of the box, helping to make the Internet of Things (IoT) applications of tomorrow autonomous and sustainable.

Your activity will be at an exciting intersection of the following fields:

  • Remote powering. You will perform design, analysis, simulation verification and experiment the remote powering concepts in laboratory environment and in the field. Possible approaches to narrow the channel of power transmission (time, space, frequency) will have to be explored. The context covers indoor or enclosed applications with the aim to miniaturize the solution.
  • Radiofrequency antenna (rectenna). You will be involved in the design and optimization of compact, efficient antennas for RF power emitter and receiver. Depending on the approach selected for power transmission, the use of new prototyping technologies, materials and methods will be considered.
  • Wireless power source. You will be involved in the design, optimization, and experimental verification of the remote powering concept. This will also include study on signal generation and modulation techniques. Exploration of possible solutions for a wide range of loads and environments.
  • The result of your work will be an efficient yet low-cost and miniature remote powering system, which will be able to make a difference in the autonomy and ease of deployment of real-world IoT applications.

    Your profile

You are in possession of a Masters (or equivalent) degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics with background and passion in (most of) the following topics:

  • Baseband HW and SW, RF HW, System architecture
  • Solid understanding of RF theory, principles, and implementations
  • Understanding of antenna theory and hands-on
  • Knowledge of EM solvers (e.g. HFSS, CST, FEKO)
  • Fluency in English is required, proficiency in French is an advantage
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • We offer

CSEM offers a stimulating and multidisciplinary work environment with the opportunity to benefit from an intensive supervision for your thesis and to develop your digital/mixed signal design skills. Moreover, depending on the results, there might be an option to become co-author of a conference/journal paper. Finally, you will have the opportunity to benefit from excellent social security conditions and to evolve within a multicultural company which clearly promotes an employee-driven culture.
