Department of Chemistry
PhD Student Position: Material Design for Artificial Photosynthesis
60 %
Prof. Dr. Greta Patzke's research group is a member of the University of Zurich Research Priority Program on
Solar Light to Chemical Energy Conversion (LightChEC) , where the fundamentals of artificial photosynthesis are investigated in a multi-disciplinary environment. Our team is looking for a chemist or materials scientist with strong interest in the innovative design and understanding of new water splitting catalysts. We place special emphasis on the following aspects:
Design of new (co-)catalysts. We work with a wide range of noble metal-free nano/atomic scale and molecular catalysts, including single atom catalyst and coordination polymers. The new project will primarily focus on the development of novel robust and low-cost heterogeneous (photo-)electrocatalysts. To this end, our laboratory infrastructure offers a wide range of synthetic facilities and in house analytical techniques for materials characterization. Catalytic pathways. We are particularly interested in unravelling performance-properties relationships and catalytic mechanisms. Therefore, the project will involve the use of diverse spectroscopic methods (AFM-Raman, fluorescence spectroscopy, EPR, XPS...). Highly performing catalysts will be further investigated in depth using our in-house X-ray absorption spectroscopy setup, followed by in situ/operando XAS experiments at synchrotron facilities.
Your responsibilities
The project aims to promote the understanding of dynamic processes and optimization principles of catalytic transition metal centers in different matrices. We offer overarching activities to correlate such principles for molecules and solids.
Your profile
We look forward to a creative and explorative team member with a MSc degree in inorganic or materials chemistry and strong interest in structural research. Crystallographic knowledge is essential, and experience in different preparative/spectroscopic techniques is a prerequisite. Strong English writing and good teamwork skills are required.
What we offer
We offer state-of-the-art research facilities and attractive support for your independent development.
