PhD Positions in Polymer Chemistry in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Polymeric Materials Laboratory in the Materials Department of ETH Zurich has two fully-funded PhD positions. Our group focuses on the development of new methods for the synthesis of smart polymers and polymeric nanomaterials. We routinely exploit controlled radical polymerization and other strategies to produce polymeric materials with controlled architecture, molecular weight, dispersity and functionality. We subsequently seek to understand the self-assembly of polymeric materials into nanostructures where all properties can be controlled (e.g. size, shape, surface, core). Key to our strategy is to understand the fundamentals of polymerization mechanisms and allow facile access to the production of well-defined polymeric (nano)materials.

Job description

The research related to the two doctorate positions will deal with polymer synthesis and characterization by controlled radical polymerization and other techniques. The focus is to:

  1. improve existing methodologies to synthesize complex (nano)materials (e.g., ATRP, RAFT, emulsion polymerization),
  2. fundamentally understand the underlying mechanism of these polymerization systems
  3. translate the knowledge obtained to synthesize sequence- and dispersity-controlled polymers.

In addition, new strategies will be developed to reverse the controlled radical polymerization and produce monomers from functional polymers. The recycled monomers will be used to reproduce the original polymers with improved properties or to synthesize new polymers and polymeric nanomaterials.

The PhD positions are fully funded for four years (extendable) with a competitive salary according to . The starting date is late 2021 or early 2022 (upon mutual agreement). Applications are considered on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.

Your profile

We are looking for exceptional candidates with an M.Sc. degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Material Science or related area and a strong background in Polymer Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Previous experience and knowledge in ATRP, RAFT, emulsion polymerization, organic synthesis, and polymer characterization is an advantage but not a must.

Above all, candidates should be highly passionate about science and research, self-motivated, curious, creative and enthusiastic in what they do, as well as have strong team spirit, excellent critical thinking and other skills, and advanced knowledge of written and spoken English.
