PhD Positions in Inorganic Chemistry in Zürich

Studierende finden an der ETH Zürich ein Umfeld, das eigenständiges Denken fördert, Forschende ein Klima, das zu Spitzenleistungen inspiriert.

Jobbeschreibung

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Functional Coordination Chemistry Laboratory () at ETH Zurich has fully-funded PhD positions.

Our newly established group applies the tools and approaches of inorganic/organometallic chemistry to synthesize molecules and materials with stimuli-responsive (sensory) and catalytic function. The targeted chemistry spans transition metal/main group complexes, metallopolymers and carbon nanomaterials.

Job description

The foci of the PhD projects are to:

  1. Design and execute new synthetic routes to coordination complexes, organometallics, metallopolymers and carbon allotrope-inorganic hybrids.
  2. Gain insight into the electronic structures, magnetic/thermochemical properties of newly synthesized materials using a suite of spectroscopic techniques (NMR, EPR, IR, Raman, XPS, Mössbauer, MCD), crystallography (single-crystal, powder) and electrochemistry.
  3. Apply the materials as catalysts and as active sensing elements for the degradation and detection of environmental pollutant gases. Target analytes of particular interest are those relevant to sustainable agriculture.

Throughout the course of the projects, students will gain proficiency in synthesizing and characterizing organic/inorganic molecules and polymers, in addition to acquiring hands-on experience in sensor device fabrication and testing. Consequently, students will bring multiple areas of expertise to bear in order to solve problems and will receive a highly multidisciplinary education.

Your profile

We are looking for someone with a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in chemistry, materials science or related area and a background in synthetic chemistry. Any previous experience in air- and moisture-free manipulations (ie. Schlenk technique, glovebox operations) and in the characterization of metal complexes is an advantage but not essential.

Above all, we are seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic scientists who thrive in collaborative working environments, who enjoy taking on challenges, learning new skills, critical thinking and problem solving. Fluent communication skills in English (oral and written) are essential, as is a willingness to work as part of a highly interactive, international, and diverse team.

The PhD positions are fully funded for four years (extendable) with a competitive salary according to . The targeted starting date is September 1, 2022 but is flexible and can be adjusted upon mutual agreement.
